On your wedding day
The most important thing you can do is to try and relax, let go, and have fun on your wedding day. This will translate into beautiful photos. The thing that shows up in photos is the stress of the day. The more you can plan ahead to avoid these things (i.e. hiring good vendors, planning a relaxed morning, planning for any unexpected problems and padding your schedule), the better your photos will turn out. And last but not the least is something every wedding photographer in Sydney or in the rest of world will tell you, enjoy your wedding day, don't let the little things get to you.
Pre-Wedding Photo shoot
Having a pre-wedding photo shoot can improve your wedding photos more than anything else you might do. Think about it, your photographer is VERY comfortable at his end of the camera. The time you spend with your photographer in front of the camera will help you become more comfortable being the subject.
Try to get to know your photographer. Have fun. Be crazy. Let's face it; those "magazine bridal photos" that you've been looking at don't happen all by themselves. they are well planned, rehearsed, and the photo you finally see in the magazine was probably picked from hundreds of photos. The more time you spend with your photographer, the more likely it is that he will capture that one (hopefully lots more) special moment that only happens once.
Style
Make sure the photographer you hire is someone whose work , style, and personality you connect with. Not many realize that they will spend more time with the photographer on their wedding day than almost any other single person. Its essential that you get along with your wedding photographer, since it will definitely effect your photos.
A lot of Studios have more than 1 photographer so make sure you meet the person who will photograph your wedding, and that you see that persons photography.
If you have any specific photos you want, communicate your wishes with your photographer before the wedding day. this will help you both be on the same page and ensure that the photos that you expect are the photos that you will get, most photographers have a general idea of what photos are required but every Bride is different. Keep in mind the reason why you hired the photographer (for example, if you hired a photographer that is known for a very candid look, don't expect the photographer to spend hours taking posed pictures).
Wedding day lighting
When choosing your photo locations and time of day, keep lighting in mind. If your wedding is outdoors, the best lighting happens 1-2 hours before sunset, most photographers like about 1.5 - 2 hours for location photos.
If you choose more than 1 location for wedding photos don't forget to allow for travelling between locations. also its a good idea to take a few refreshments if possible as by this time the bridal party may need something to eat or drink .
Timing
Create a plan with your photographer to allow time for fun and to take advantage of the best light of the day. Keep in mind the possibility of an excessively hot or cold day and have a backup plan in case of wet weather.
Allow a little extra time than you expect for travel to ensure the photo session runs as smoothly as possible, Please communicate with everyone involved before the wedding so everyone knows how important it is to participate in your special photos as you only get one chance.
